What is it?
It is simple web tool that shows you how long different dog breeds usually live. For example, if you pick a Golden Retriever, you will see its median lifespan is 13.2 years. If you choose a Chihuahua, it’s 11.8 years.
But what does median lifespan mean? It’s the middle age in a list of lifespans for a dog breed. Let’s say you have five dogs of the same breed, and they passed away at ages 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14. The median is 12, because it’s the number in the middle. That means half the dogs lived longer than 12 years, and half lived shorter. It’s not exactly the same as the average, but it helps show a typical lifespan.
How does it work?
- Pick a breed: Click the ‘Select a breed’ button, and a drop-down list will appear. It shows 156 dog breeds in alphabetical order, like Beagle, Bulldog, or Poodle. Now, just choose the one you want.
- See the answer: Right after you pick a breed, the median lifespan appears below the menu. It’s a number like 10.5 or 14.0 years.
